Preparing your OPUS® Camper for Winter: Maintenance tips & storage advice
As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, it’s the perfect time to prepare your OPUS® Camper for winter storage. A little effort now ensures your camper stays in top condition and is ready to hit the road as soon as spring arrives. From draining water systems to covering your OPUS® Camper correctly, this will cover everything you need to know.
Water systems: Drain, sterilise, and dry
- Drain all water containers & tanks: Before the cold sets in, fully empty all water canisters, water tanks (see release valves on the hot water system) and check for any standing water in visible pipes.
- Sterilise with a safe product: Use a sterilising solution like Milton to cleanse your water system thoroughly. This prevents bacteria from building up during the dormant months.
- Flush and dry thoroughly: After sterilising, flush the system with clean water. Ensure all components, including the sink basin, are thoroughly wiped dry to prevent the risk of mould or ice damage.
Tent and interior: Moisture control is key
- Ensure everything is dry before folding down: Moisture is the enemy of any stored fabric. Before closing up your OPUS® Camper for the season, double-check that the tent canvas and all interior spaces are completely dry.
- Remove condensation from windows and storage areas: Inspect the inside of cupboards and the space between the blinds and windows. Any trapped moisture can lead to mould during storage.
Electrical and heating system care
- Switch off all systems properly: Ensure the heater kill switch is turned OFF, and disconnect the LED plug from the coaxial socket point to prevent unnecessary power drainage or potential issues.
- Battery maintenance for Winter: After your last trip, fully charge your OPUS® battery. For leisure batteries, recharge them every six months. You can remove the battery and recharge it at home using a compatible charger to maintain performance.
Covers and safe storage practices
- Use the right cover for Winter: Choose either the Standard Roof Cover or the All-Weather Cover for the best protection. These are designed to shield your OPUS® Camper from rain, snow, and UV damage.
- Avoid the load-carrying cover during storage: This cover isn’t made for prolonged storage conditions. Remove any roof bars before covering your camper to prevent unnecessary wear.
Final Winter safety checks
- Inspect tyres, chassis, and running gear: Check the tyre condition and age. Schedule your annual chassis service before storage, if needed, to catch any issues early.
- Service gas and electrical components: Review all gas and electrical systems. Check expiry dates and ensure annual servicing is up to date – your safety certifications should reflect this.
- Bonus tip: Air out on a sunny day: If the weather permits, inflate your tent on a bright winter day for a few hours. It’s a great way to air the interior before resealing for storage
